At least nine US-Mexican citizens have been reported dead. They are said to have been caught up in the fight between two warring cartels. It is feared that danger is mounting because of the presence of these organized crime groups.

The victims are said to be part of the LeBaron Mormon family including three mothers and six children who worship at the Mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and are from La Mora which is 70 miles south of Douglas, Ariz.

The victims include Maria Rhonita Miller and her four children. Among Rhonita’s children are two six months old twins. After being shot, their vehicle was set on fire. Others are Dawna Ray Langford, 43 and her two children; Trevor aged 11 and Rogan aged 3.

The last of the dead is Christian Marie Langford, a 31 years old woman. Three other children have been reported to suffer from gun wounds and are currently being treated.

The families of the slain reported that Rhonita had suffered a flat tire and one of the other vehicles had gone back for help. The waiting Rhonita was then killed alongside her children.

When the two other vehicles returned, they were ambushed and killed too. However, some children escaped with gunshot wounds.

According to the authorities, the cartel from Chihuahua must have been encroaching on the territory of the rival cartel. Also, they speculated that the victims’ vehicles must have been mistaken for those of the rival group since they were travelling in a convoy. The three women drove three different vehicles with their children as passengers.

Authorities in the Sonora and United States Embassy have yet to respond to any comments from the press.
