In 2010, Nigeria spent 12.77 trillion Naira on food. Last year, the nation recorded 22.78 trillion Naira spent on food which is a 10.01 trillion naira jump in the amount spent 10 years ago. In 2018, the total expenditures used by households in the country on food and other items was 21.62 trillion Naira.

Subsequently in 2019, the total expenditure was 40.21 trillion Naira. 56.65% of the total expenditure was spent on food while 43.35% was spent on nonfood items. This was disclosed by the report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Food eaten outside the house also made up a lion share of the expenditure, it is followed closely by transportation costs. Tubers, plantains, and starchy roots also make up for significant part of the total expenditure.

According to analysis, Lagos State has the biggest share of the consumption expenditure with 5.07 trillion Naira. Oyo, Delta, Rivers, and Kano follow closely with 5.83%, 5.38%, 4.99%, and 4.91% respectively.
