The newly elected World Trade Organization Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has shed some light on the direction she will take and what she hopes to achieve as the leader of the Geneva-based organization.

Ngozi, a Harvard and MIT alumnae is the first female and first person of African descent(Nigerian) to take the helm of affairs at the organization. As part of her mission, she hopes to ease strained US-China relations and rising protectionism across the globe.

She also disclosed plans to reform the World Trade Organization in a bid to win back lost trust and promote fair trade and also help facilitate the pandemic recovery process.

She will also investigate if the former US President, Donald Trump took a wrong turn in slapping steel and aluminium tariffs against China and Europe to push his America First narrative.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in a statement is very well aware of the high expectations placed on her shoulder and has disclosed that her ultimate priority at this time is to produce results. Read her statement in part below

“All credit to members for electing me and making that history, but the bottom line is that if I want to really make Africa and women proud I have to produce results, and that’s where my mind is at now.”

Ngozi who has in times past served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Foreign Minister held a 25-year career at the World Bank and rose to the second spot. She also serves as a Board Member of Twitter, Standard Chartered and several other organizations.
