A newly-born baby of Nigerian parents has died in Italy after a botched home circumcision, local media report.

Italian news agency said the baby, who was only a few weeks old, was found dead at home in Genoa, a port city in north-western Italy.

The incident was reported to emergency services by the baby’s Nigerian mother and grandmother.

“The events took place overnight. The two women have been taken in for questioning by Police amid suspicions that a third person attempted the circumcision,’’ the agency said.

A 5-month-old boy from a Ghanaian family, living in northern Italy, died on March 25 in the hospital after his parents tried a home circumcision.

Migrants have resorted to performing circumcision on their own or employing the services of unlicensed doctors as price for circumcision in hospitals and maternity centres soar.

A paediatrician and representative of the Islamic Centre of Rome, Mustafa Qaddurah, said “the only solution’’ is for the state to pay for the operations.

  1. “the only solution’’ is for the state to pay for the operations.
We Europeans shouldn’t pay these surgeries because:
    1. There are non therapeutical surgeries that violate childrens right to their bodily integrity
    2. Is a NON THERAPEUTICAL SURGERY. So taxpayers shouldn’t pay for it. If parents are so interested, then save money and pay for it. Sure they will find some unethical doctors that agree to perform the mutilation for money
