The Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education of Nigeria, SSUCOEN, has rejected and wants a reversal in the appointment of provosts to six newly established federal colleges of education, describing it as a bridge to the condition of service, 2015 Edition, for Colleges of Education in Nigeria.

The SSUCOEN said the appointments were mostly based on political considerations, who are mostly from core civil service, private sector, and sectors outside Colleges of Education System, hinting that over 90% do not meet requirements for appointment as Principal Officers.

It further noted that since Governing Councils for the new Colleges of Education have been constituted, they have the powers to appoint Principal Officers, as provided, and wonders why the Federal Ministry of Education rushed to appoint Principal Officers for the six colleges.

The SSUCOEN President, Danladi Ali Msheliza, in a letter to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said if the concerns raised are not urgently addressed, the Union may be left with no option than to initiate actions that would challenge the observed infractions, in line with the Conditions of Service for Colleges of Education.

Msheliza, while describing the appointment of the Provost of FCE Technical Ekiadolor, Edo State, as the only deserving among the six, said the Union’s position is premised on adherence to the rule of law, as preached by the government.

The six new Federal Colleges of Education are FCE Iwo, Osun State; FCE Gidan Madi, Sokoto State, FCE Odugbo, Benue State, FCE Jama’are, Bauchi State, FCE Isu, Ebonyi State, and FCE Technical Ekiadolor, Edo State.
