The American media-services provider and production company Netflix is set to premiere this year, February 28 an African original series titled ‘Queen Sono’. This is about a South African woman seeking to dig into her mother’s murder and unravel the truth behind it.
While she is at it, the woman is also protecting her country, South Africa from dark forces.
African Filmmakers’ made it known that the release and premiere of the Original African story ‘Queen of Sono’ on the best streaming TV service will be a boost to its film scene. Giving its film scene the right shove it deserves.
Netflix who is devoted to making intriguing original African stories be globally made known to DW that they are going for Queen of Sono because it’s an entertaining African thriller filled with smart political dramas.
The founder and producer of Ominira Studios, a content production company and consulting firm in New York, Melissa Adeyemo pointed out the urge and demand of African stories especially in Nigeria and the recognition it’s receiving from Netflix.
She stated that the series in South Africa that is set to be premiered will give space in the international market for African Actors, Actress, Screenwriters, and even directors. Talented Nigerian Filmmaker Chuku Esiri also shares in this thought. “
Obviously it’s always great when massive institutions like Netflix are interested in working in Africa and try to get those stories and empower creative individuals,” Esiri told DW. Recently a film titled ‘Eyimofe’ directed by Chuku and Arie Esiri premiered at the Berlinale in Germany.
Netflix which seems very interested in African stories also plans to release its first animated film from Africa in the fourth month of the year. ‘’Mama K’s Team 4’. A futuristic animation about the lives of 4 girls from Zambia.
However, it was gathered that Netflix has few subscribers from Africa and most subscribers in Africa are from South Africa. Although, Netflix itself has not released the number of subscribers it has in Africa.
