Mixed Reactions as Salesforce buys Slack for $28 Billion

Salesforce has acquired Slack, the messaging app that grew astronomically during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic for $27.7 billion in both cash and stock. 

The merger, which will see the Slack CEO, Stewart Butterfield continue to lead the platform as an operating unit of Salesforce, has been lauded by both CEOs. Marc Benioff in a statement expressed excitement saying both Salesforce and Slack will drive the future of enterprise software across the globe. 

Slack gained popularity with many small to medium scale enterprises for its ability to connect organizations large and small by removing the propriety that comes with email by creating a more relaxed environment for colleagues to work or collaborate, especially remote working conditions.

However, some sentiments have spread with many in the technology community fearing what comes with many mergers – changes that fundamentally disrupt the innovative nature of agile and nimble fast-paced start-ups.
