Minister of State for INformation confirms indefinite WAEC and NECO

The Nigerian Government once again repeated the postponement of the May/June West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) as the country battles the pandemic disease that has affected every sphere of life. In a statement, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba the country’s Minister of State for Education disclosed that the postponement of these Examinations is indefinite.

Following the outbreak of the virus in Nigeria, the Buhari administration had announced 19 March that schools should be shut down. Both Primary, Secondary, and even Tertiary institutions. This is in a bid to flatten the infection cycle and prevent the spread of coronavirus. According to the Minister of State for Education, the Federal government is looking at ways to safely reopen schools. Commenting further, until efforts have been coordinated by the Federal government, schools will remain shut.

Chukwuemeka revealed that the Federal government made provisions for some students to continue learning virtually. Portals were opened by The Directorate of Information and Communication Technology. According to him, 15 of the 36 states in the country like Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, and Edo to mention a few started electronic learning for their students on local televisions and radio platforms. He admonished parents to make their wards participate in this learning and be ready to learn when these programs air.

The Nigeria Minister of State of Education disclosed that the educational programs broadcasted at different times on several platforms for the students are approved by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Commission. However, there have been some challenges.

Reaching students who rural areas with no access to these devices have posed difficulty for the government. Chukwuemeka stated that there are adult education programs running and need to be made available for Primary and secondary school students.
