Amidst risk of pandemic disease, Malawi holds it’s next election. Other African countries like Burundi, Mali, and Benin are also refused to postpone general elections.

However, Malawi recorded low turnout which ruined the voters’ roll verification exercise. Both in the Central and Northern regions, the first phase of the voters’ rolls verification exercise ended yesterday, May 19.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP), United Transformation Movement (UTM), and seven other parties which are a part of the opposition Tonse Alliance started a campaign to lure voters into verifying their names, replacing their Voters identity Card and transfer as Malawi prepares for its July 2nd Presidential election.

The exercising in Neno is also experienced a low turnout. NICE District Education Officer Wallace Kudzala, however, is certain numbers would increase towards the close of the exercise.

Mercy Kazembe, NICE Assistant Civic Education Officer in Ntchisi stated that the small number of voters is because Malawians are unclear about the voting day.

Only 495 voters turned up at a voting center in Mzuzu on Friday.
