Low turnout of voters witnessed today, May 22, 2021, in the just-concluded Oyo State local government and councilorship elections held across the state.

The voters did not turn up at the polling centre as expected. It’s election day in the 33 Local Government Areas of Oyo State, southwest Nigeria.

The people are expected to vote for their Local Government Chairmen and Councilors. But the reverse is the case as many electorates did not turn out.

Most polling units visited in Ibadan, the state capital, looked empty with few people although residents complied with the sit-at-home order by the state government.

Though many polling units witnessed the late arrival of electoral materials, the voting process was peaceful. It was discovered that those who came out to vote did not obey the Covid-19 precautionary measures of social distancing and wearing of nose cover.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Oyo state Governor, Seyi Makinde, applauded OYSIEC for the good job done.

There are 17 political parties participating in the election excluding the All Progressives Congress.
