Real Madrid has sacked Julen Lopetegui as manager after the embarrassing 5-1 crushing defeat in the El Classico by Barcelona.

The 52-year-old Spaniard succeeded Zinedine Zidane in June after he was fired as coach of the Spanish national team before the World Cup due to having planned his move to Real without informing the Spanish Football Federation.

Lopetegui has now lost two jobs in less than five months. The Champions League holders are currently ninth in the La Liga after having their worst start since 2001/02 season as they have failed to win in the league since beating Espanyol on September 22, losing to Sevilla, Alaves, Levante and drawing with Atletico Madrid.

Ex-Real Madrid player Santiago Solari, coach of B team Castilla has been called upon to be a provisional replacement to the 52-year-old.

Solari has a favourable run of fixtures for the start of his tenure, beginning with a Spanish Cup match against Segunda Division B Group 4 side Melilla on Wednesday.

Real then play Valladolid – sixth in La Liga – on Saturday, Group G’s bottom side Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on 7 November, and the mid-table Celta Vigo the following Sunday.
