Lassa Fever: One dead, three suspects under surveillance in Borno

The Borno State Government has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa Fever in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Salihu Aliyu Bura, told reporters in Maiduguri that one person has been confirmed dead from the virus with three suspected cases.

The Commissioner explained that the outbreak was confirmed at Bolori, a settlement within Maiduguri metropolitan.

The victim, a 24-year-old, was said to have been rushed to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital where he died.

According to him, the three suspected cases are being quarantined at a designated center at Jajeri within Maiduguri.

Lassa Fever is named after a town in Borno State called “Lassa” in the southern part of the state where it was first discovered in 1969.
