Kano Government Challenges Court Jurisdiction On Salary Deduction Suit

A Kano State High Court has fixed March 2 for ruling on a motion filed by Kano state government challenging the jurisdiction of the court in the matter brought before it by judiciary staff union JUSUN over salary deductions.

The union has filed a legal suit asking the court to stop the state government from further deduction of salaries of members and a refund of previous deduction.

Owing to drop in revenue and federal allocation to the state in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, Kano state government resorted to deduction of workers salary after it had agreed and begun payment of a new minimum wage of 30,600 Naira with consequential adjustments.

A senior state counsel, Wada Ahmad Wada, told the court that it lacked jurisdiction to hear the case as any matter that concerns employer and employee relations or borders on salary and wages is exclusive preserve of National industrial court.

Justice Usman Na’abba fixed March 2 for ruling on the motion.
