A court in the United States has convicted Jucontee Thomas Woewiyu on eleven counts making him one of the highest-ranking officials of the Liberian government under former President Charles Taylor.

Mister Woewiyu is accused of recruiting Chike soldiers during the civil war and specifically targeting certain ethnic groups in the course of the conflict.

Evidence was also heard how he targeted west Africans of all nationalities in retribution for the involvement of peacekeepers from Nineteen ninety to Nineteen ninety-three.

His crimes were mainly related to immigration fraud, but to prove that, his underlying war crimes had to be proved as well.

As the verdict was pronounced, mister Woewiyu remained passive.

He will remain under house arrest until October when he will be sentenced .
