Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators rally outside Downing Street in support of the Palestinian population of Gaza on 14th October 2023 in London, United Kingdom. Large Palestinian solidarity rallies have been held throughout the UK following Israel's retaliatory attacks on Gaza despite a warning from UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman that waving Palestinian flags or chanting popular slogans in support of Palestine may constitute public order offences. The UN General Assembly is set to vote on the Israel-Gaza war, but Palestine, as an observer state, will not have a say. Jordan, acting on behalf of Arab countries, has proposed a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire after the UN Security Council failed to take action. Palestine’s status at the UN is non-member observer, with a long history of non-member status. The Security Council, which includes all 193 of the UN’s member states, has the power of veto, blocking resolutions critical of Israel.
