As part of efforts to ensure more active participation in the electoral processes, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it is working towards actualizing converting 1,765 voting points to polling units in Niger State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Samuel Egwu, disclosed this during a stakeholder meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State capital.

Professor Egwu stressed that the existing 3, 185 polling units do not meet up the electoral needs of the people.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner attributed the mass influx of people from the neighbouring states as part of some of the challenges the commission is contending with in Niger State.

The laid down rules and regulations and understanding of the electoral process by the political parties and voters will assist in achieving the desired results.

Stakeholders who participated in the meeting were drawn from the security agencies, political parties, Non-Governmental Organizations, as well as the media.

About 120 polling units were created in 1996 to meet up with the over 50 million eligible voters across the country.

The Electoral Commission also pointed out that the commission, as of the last Voters Registration Exercise in 2019, had about 90 million eligible voters.
