Delays associated with voter accreditation will not feature in the 2019 elections following the introduction of simultaneous accreditation and balloting at polling units.

Independent National Electoral Commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kano State, Professor Riskuwa Shehu, said this at a town hall meeting with Civil Society Organisations, media, security agencies and political parties on voter education.

He said there will be 91 political parties on ballot papers in the 2019 elections and voter education is therefore important to avoid high turnover of invalid votes.

Professor Shehu said the state has 5457747 registered voters with 11229 polling units.

He noted that the new guidelines for the 2019 elections will allow for simultaneous accreditation of voters and balloting.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner explained that mobile phones would not be allowed at polling stations to discourage vote buying and vote selling.

47 political parties are contesting the governorship election, 115 candidates are seeking three senatorial seats from 44 political parties while 688 candidates are competing for 24 House of Representatives seats from 50 political parties in Kano State.
