The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has de-registered 74 political parties for failing to satisfy the requirements to operate as contained in the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution.
Consequently the electoral umpire cleared 16 political parties, which it said have fulfilled the requirements for existence in line with section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

This was disclosed by Festus Okoye, INEC’s national commissioner in charge of publicity and voter education. Okoye who represented the chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a stakeholders’ forum on electoral reforms said the commission is committed to the enhancement of the power of the smart card reader.
