INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says no national commissioner has been invited by any security agency, as being speculated by a section of the media.

Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja, while speaking on the level of preparations by the Commission for the rescheduled presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday.

It was the second time the INEC was addressing newsmen after it announced the postponement of elections.

This time around, the Commission is revealing to Nigerians, how far it has gone in making sure there is no repeat of the incidents that brought about the initial postponement.

Professor Yakubu seems to have realized the level of displeasure expressed by Nigerians over the postponement.

He has on behalf of the Commission apologised and taken responsibility, with a promise that INEC will work harder to ensure, the election is free, fair, and credible.

It was also a moment for INEC to deny some allegations of election materials in the hands of politicians, as well as the report that the Department of State Services, DSS, invited some of its national commissioners, for questioning.

The Commission also denied reports that a certain politician is in charge of reconfiguring the smart card readers for Saturday’s elections.

The INEC Chairman said he will on a daily basis speak on the level of preparedness for the elections.
