Famous Indonesia singer, Didi Kempot died this morning on 5 May 2020 in Surakarta, Central Java. According to the hospital’s public relations assistant, Kempot was unconscious before his arrival at the hospital. He was reported to have suffered a heart attack. He was famous for his campur sari genre of music.

His songs are a brilliant mix of Javanese and present-day music. Kempot was nicknamed ‘Godfather of Broken hearts’ for his relatable performance of sad love songs which keep his audience really engrossed. His fans include young people that referred to themselves as ‘sad boys /girls’ because Didi’s songs resonate with their sad love stories.

Just before his death, Didi Kempot assisted in raising Rp 5.3 billion (US$335,000) to all those who had been laid-off from work as a result of the outbreak of the pandemic disease. These funds were raised through a staged concert at the historic Lokananta music studio in Surakarta.

Didi started off his music at a street-side food stall in the Keprabon area and also on the streets of Jarkata. He died at 53 and was married to Yan Veilla.
