Justice A. O. Onovo of the Enugu State High Court has declared the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra by the South-East Governors’ Forum as illegal, unconstitutional, and null and void. The South-East Governors’ Forum, led by former Gov David Umahi of Ebonyi State, proscribed IPOB activities in 2017, leading to the Federal Government listing IPOB as a terror organisation. IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu sought the reversal of the prescription, arguing that the proscription was illegal and infringement of fundamental rights. Kanu urged the court to declare self-determination as a crime and compel defendants to pay him N8bn in damages.
