A police escort attached to Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representative, has shot dead a newspaper vendor in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
In a statement released by the Speaker, he said a full investigation would be carried out on the issue.
According to Punch Newspaper, the incident occurred around 3 pm on Thursday, November 19, around the Federal secretariat, close to the Three Arms Zone.
The vendor identified as Ifeanyi Okereke was rushed to the National Hospital by colleagues after being shot in the head, and he was later declared dead.
Contrary to the reports, Mr. Gbajabiamila said his security team fired shots in the air when some unidentified men blocked his convoy, thereby hitting Okereke with a stray bullet.
He said he has made a report to a police station and investigations are being carried out.
Meanwhile, the officer who shot the victim has been suspended prior to the investigation being carried out.
