The Nigerian House of Representatives says it will give every legislative support for Nigeria to be given a right of place for its contributions to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation programme.

Speaking at the opening session of a two-day high-level retreat organized by REDD Plus Nigeria in Calabar, the Chairman House Committee on Climate Change, Mohammed Bukar, said the National Assembly will support the Federal Government on its carbon emission projects.

Bukar who was represented by Sulaiman Abubakar said the forest conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in Nigeria is a global climate change mitigation initiative which the country was a signatory.

On his part, the UNREDD+ Coordinator in Nigeria, Amos Ama, said the retreat is to inform the parliamentarians and other stakeholders on its efforts on forest communities to reduce their access to forests which need the lawmakers’ support.

Currently, Cross River State of Nigeria is one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world.
