According to reports from the FT, claims which according to Reuters are malicious rumours, the Chinese Government is currently working towards a successor for Carrie Lam by March next year, who will remain in power till 2022.

There are speculations that possible replacements include Norman Chan, formerly the leader of Hong Kong Monetary Authority or Henry Tang the financial secretary and chief secretary of the administration.

Also, the murder suspect wanted by the Taiwan government, whose case was the root cause of this protest, Chai Tong-kai has been released from Prison on the premise to turn himself to the authorities in Taipei.

He confessed to killing his girlfriend Poon Hiu-wing in Taipei before fleeing to Taiwan to attain immunity for his crimes. He repeatedly bowed in apology to the lady’s family and made the following statements

“I understand I’ve made an irreversible mistake and brought enormous pain to Hiu Wing’s family. I’ve been feeling guilty all along,” he said.

Chai Tong-kai

“I’m willing to surrender myself to Taiwan and serve my sentence there for my mistake. I hope Hiu-wing’s family will be relieved and Hiu-wing can rest in peace.”

Chai Tong-kai

“I thank my parents and my family for supporting and caring for me though I made a huge mistake. I dare not say I can repay them, but I’ll definitely remember what they did for me. Lastly, to Hong Kong people and society… sorry. I hope I’ll be forgiven and given a chance to start afresh and contribute to society,” he said.

Chai Tong-kai

Chai Tong-kai’s case was the premise upon which Carrie Lam made the decision of the Extradition Bill that has now been overturned formally. The overturned Bill meets one of the 5 listed conditions that the Hong Kong Protesters have listed as conditions to withdraw. The others are

Implementation of complete universal suffrage

Amnesty for all the arrested protesters

An independent inquiry into Police Brutality

And finally for the protests to not be considered a riot
