Greek Super League: Football referees on indefinite strike protest

Football referees in Greece are embarking on an indefinite strike in protest against an attack on one of their colleagues, which they have described as a ‘cowardly attack’.

Thanasis Tzilos, a FIFA badged referee was attacked as he left his home in the central Greek town of Larissa by four hooded assailants, sustaining severe head and leg injuries.

Tzilos, who doubles as a civil engineer by profession last officiated a match ten days ago, the 1-1 draw between Xanthi and Olympiakos. He was discharged earlier today from the hospital, where he received stitches for his injuries.

There have been reportedly 33 attacks or threats to referees in Greece since 2009. The Greek government and the nation’s Football Federation have condemned the attack on the 33-year old referee, the body has also informed both UEFA and FIFA about the incident while the Larissa police continue their investigation.
