Human Rights Advocate and High Court Judge, Katerina Sakellaropoulou has bee elected to be Greece’s first-ever female president earlier today. She was nominated by the ruling conservative party.

Katerina Sakellaropoulou has broken several gender-related barriers as she was the first female to serve in the position of president as the Council of State at Germany’s top Administrative court.

In total, Katerina Sakellaropoulou received support from 261 Members of Parliament in a 300-seat parliament, overreaching the expected requirement of 200 by 261 extra votes.

The Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis shared that the results were optimistic, read his statements below

“Our country enters, with more optimism, into a new decade,”

This selection is unique as not only is Katerina Sakellaropoulou the first female to be elected, she also doesn’t belong to any political party. A poll by MRB pollsters revealed that at least 55% saw her as a positive choice.

She will be succeeding President Prokopis Pavlopoulos as the Greek President.
