Governor Obaseki wins re-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Governor Godwin Obaseki, winner of the 2020 Edo State governorship election.

The INEC declared Obaseki winner after announcing the result of Ovia South-West Local Government Area with Obaseki scoring 12,659 to defeat the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, Ize-Iyamu with 10,636.

Obaseki won with a total vote of 307,955 in 13 out of the 18 local government areas of the State to retain his position and recreating the outcome of the encounter between both frontrunners in 2016.

He won defeating Ize-Iyamu to a distant second in a contest of 14 candidates from different political parties.

The Election Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Petroleum Resources Effurun in Delta State, Professor Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, who declared the results, said Godwin Obaseki won in two-thirds of the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State.

The total number of the vote cast in the Edo governorship election is 550,242 out of which 537,407 were valid votes and 12,835 returned as rejected votes.
