With the police alleged to have already made arrests in connection with dastardly robbery attacks in Offa, Kwara State, the state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has offered to pay the medical bills of the victims of the multiple bank robberies. This is even as the number of the dead, including policemen, is said to be increasing, with some accounts putting the figure at well over 20 persons.

“We will take care of all their hospital bills, we must begin to watch each other’s back,” the governor said.

The governor’s pledge came during his condolence visit on Friday at the General Hospital in Ilorin, as he toured the wards where injured victims of the raids were being treated.

Thursday’s attack on five banks in Offa saw armed robbers storming the entrances of First Bank, Zenith Bank, Union Bank, Eco Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank.

In a well-planned attack, the robbers reportedly secured the surrounding area by blocking roads from Ilorin and Osogbo, whereupon they stormed the Owode police station and killed some policemen.

The robbers blew up the banks’ entrances, and, after a raid which lasted for over an hour, made away with millions of naira.

Casualties of the attack included 12 dead, including policemen, and several injured.

NAN reports that Offa has, in the past, been the been witness to serial attacks on its banks, which has led to the closure of some bank branches in the community.
