Goodluck Jonathan pushes for appointment of LG Chairmen by Elections

Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan has advised the National Assembly to scrap the section within the 1999 constitution that allows Local Government Chairmen to be appointed.

He disclosed that a much better approach would be for the people at the grassroot to elect theor leaders through an election process. He also advised that the local governments should be autonomous and granted necessary powers to generate revenue in their jurisdictions.

He made those statements at his residence in Otuoke when the executives of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees came visiting him in Bayelsa State.

The NULGE representatives came seeking support in countering a bill seeking to remove the local government structure from the constitution.
