After months of speculation and negotiations, Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has finally signed a new contract which will see him remain as head coach till after the June 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It is believed that Rohr has signed a two-year deal with specific conditions.

The German will perform the role of a Technical Director to the League Management Company, LMC, of the Nigerian Professional Football League, NPFL. He is expected to aid the growth development of the NPFL.

Also, Rohr will be paid in naira as well as living in Nigeria. Rohr and his team are expected to begin to pay more attention to the local talents starting from the grassroots.

The purpose is to have more players from the local league inculcated into the Super Eagles team.

There are many questions as to if Rohr would begin to include locally-based players into the squad as he clearly stated in an interview that Nigeria’s best players are found in Europe and not the NPFL.

Nigerian football fans and critics have now clamoured for Rohr to rely more on Nigerian scouts in the country.

The Nigerian Football Federation has also been called out to improve their scouting system to incorporate more players in diaspora into the Nigerian football system.

Under Rohr, Nigeria has failed to win any trophy. Their best performance so far came at the African Cup of Nations in 2019 which saw Nigerian finish third for a record 8th time.

Previously, he successfully led Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup in France but they failed to go past the group stage.

Rohr’s tactics and player selections have been questioned before but the sixty-year-old has now created an identity for the team and has a group of players that are crucial to the success of the team going forward.

Fans would be expecting an AFCON trophy and a more improved performance in the 2022 World Cup.
