Gernot Rohr and Nigeria Football Federation closer than ever towards final agreement

For several weeks now, there have been continuous reports concerning the contract situation of Gernot Rohr. Recent reports suggested that the new terms and conditions placed in the new contract offered to the German were simply ridiculous and the former Bordeaux coach was set to end his tenure as Super Eagles coach but that was not the case.

In a recent interview, Rohr cleared the air concerning the current contract situation. He stated that he agrees to be being resident in Nigeria, being paid in naira and receiving a wage cut. Rohr made it clear that his salary is not just for him but for his three assistants as well.

The sixty-six-year-old reiterated his desire to complete his set goals and objectives with the Super Eagles. He also played down the value of money at this time stating that the lives of people are more important. It is being reported that Rohr would agree to the wage cut to contribute to the fight against the pandemic.

Rohr refused to comment on the other clauses stipulated in his contracts. One of the other requirements given to him by the Nigerian Football Federation was for him to monitor the progress of the Nigerian Professional Football League to include more local-based players in the Super Eagles set up.

The last of the requirements will see Rohr working closely with the League Management Company (LMC) to improve the grassroots system in Nigeria as well as the affairs of the NPFL. All these are mandatory as Rohr’s role is not only limited to the pitch as his job function states that he is a Technical Director.

Rohr’s agreement to the first two clauses is a huge boost in the process of negotiation with NFF. It would also ease the various rumours that have been speculating in recent weeks. The German has been doing a great job so far with the Super Eagles on the pitch as well as locating great Nigerian talents in the diaspora. He has significantly improved the Super Eagles and his stay will be a huge boost to Nigerian football.
