Former world number one, Novak Djokovic, fought hard to secure his place in the third round of the French Open, beating Spaniard Jaume Munar 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The 31-year-old Serbian was handed a daunting task by 21-year-old Munar in spite of victory in straight sets, wasting a 5-2 advantage in the initial set but coming through via a tie-break.
Munar made it tough for the Serb in the next two sets, but Djokovic’s superiority eventually unfolded, showing a firm return from an elbow surgery in January, in an entertaining two hours and 19 minutes.
12-time Grand Slam champion, Djokovic later admitted his confidence had tapered since his return and acknowledged he was a bit scrappy in the second set.
He faces 13th seed Roberto Bautista Agut next in the fourth round, after the Spaniard’s 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 win over Colombian Santiago Giraldo.
