President Emmanuel Macron led the celebrations in Paris for the French Bastille Day holiday.

Troops from Central and Eastern Europe also marched during the parad in an apparent nod to the war in Ukraine and tensions in Eastern Europe.

Delegations from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria marched ahead of the traditional French military parade, each national carrying their respective national flag.

The countries – all NATO members like France – have been in the international spotlight since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, with many of them sharing borders with Ukraine or Russia.

Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, one of the key events of the French Revolution.
