The Nigerian Government has reminded civil servants of the December 1, 2021, deadline for them to get the Covid-19 vaccination.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, re-echoed the government’s directive at the sub-regional workshop on Covid-19 and social-economic recovery workshop in West Africa, by the Organisation of Trade Unions of West Africa, OTUWA.

Only a handful of federal civil servants seems to have taken the Covid-19 vaccine in Nigeria, in spite of a directive from the Presidential Steering Committee on Covid-19, placing December 1, 2021, deadline.

Residents of some states in Nigeria have resisted forceful vaccination directives by their Governments.

Also, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, at an event by the primary healthcare development argues that no worker should be forced.

But the Minister of Labour and Employment at a gathering of some West African governments and workers unions in Abuja, maintained the government’s December 1 directive to civil servants.

As Nigeria and other West African countries push for more vaccination, civil society and international development partners are suggesting more economic recovery strategies for the West African sub-region in a post-Covid-19 era.

The OTUWA is calling for more international collaboration to surmount the broad-based and multi-sectorial challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic.
