EU cries foul over £27 million COVID-19 donation to Tanzania

A member of the European Union Committee has disparaged the Tanzanian government over the decision to declare the East African nation COVID-19 free shortly after the donation of £27 million to fight the pandemic.

According to the representatives, without any statistics to show, the East African nation suddenly declared itself COVID-19 free which he described as bizarre. Not only that, he is demanding a proper explanation is offered to account for the taxpayers money which have not been used for its intended purpose.

The EU Representative also demands that members of the EU committee be duly informed of the donation of the funds and the criteria on which the said sum was offered to the African nation demanding full accountability for it.

Tanzania also received some relief packages from the International Monetary Fund in June and also borrowed an additional $3.79 million from the World Bank. An extra $50.7 million in loan was approved by the African Development Bank to fight the pandemic.

Tanzania has throughout the pandemic taken a different route towards its approach towards combating the virus, the president, John Magufuli had declared that the country could not afford a lockdown and never went on one, instead, a 3-Day National Prayer and Fasting was declared.

Also, Tanzania last gave an update to the W.H.O on April 29th, 2020 after a total of 480 cases and 16 deaths in the nation. Ironically, opposition leaders have criticized Magufuli’s approach claiming he downplayed the numbers and that there are at least 16000 to 20000 cases and the hospitals filled with patients.

However, Magufuli doubted the test results saying both goats and paw paw tested positive to the COVID-19 virus.
