Erdogan to defy US ‘threats’ over detained Pastor

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Saturday announced plans to go against US “threats” over a detained American pastor, which has worsened tensions between the two NATO allies and increased pressure on the Turkish Currency.

U.S President, Donald Trump said Friday said he had doubled steel and aluminium taxes on Turkey, increasing pressure on its troubled economy in the middle of diplomatic discord with Washington.

The White House confirmed that the newly-imposed penalties would take effect August 13. The lira dropped 16 percent against the dollar on Friday.

Turkey remains at odds with the U.S in one of the worst disagreements in years over the nearly 24-month detention of American pastor, Andrew Brunson and many other issues.

But Erdogan advised the Turks not to panic over the currency crisis, saying: “If they have the dollar, we have Allah.” He also advised them to show support by converting any gold or foreign currency previously set aside, to Turkish lira in the “war of independence” against America.

Brunson’s arrest in October 2016 worsened already tense relations with Washington.
