On the 3rd of September, the shareholders of the English Premier League decided once again to not adopt the use of five substitutions for the 2020/21 season.

Only a few teams voted for the use of five subs while majority against it. The restart of the 2019/20 season featured the use of five substitutes across all football games.

This was a measure created by FIFA and made available for implementation. The purpose was to help teams manage the fatigue and fitness levels of players.

Furthermore, FIFA announced that the use of five substitutes will be permitted for all leagues and FIFA sanctioned competitions until August 2021.

However, the EPL voted against the adoption of the rule on the 6th of August 2020. However, the big teams in the EPL brought the subject up for discussion once again and wanted the use of five subs to be permitted.

Nevertheless, the majority voted against it as only a few teams would be able to benefit from the measure.
