The victims of brutality by the police and personnel of other security agencies in Taraba State are appealing to Nigeria’s Federal Government to compensate them, as it has done in many states across the country.
Some of the victims have staged a peaceful protest in Jalingo, the state’s capital, to drive home their demands for justice.
To address the concerns of October 2020 Endsars protesters, states had set up a Judicial Panel of Enquiry and Restitution for victims of police brutality and other security agencies, as directed by the Federal Government.
One of the functions of the panel was to receive written and verbal submissions from victims of brutality by the police and other security personnel.
The panel in Taraba State was inaugurated in October 2020 and had sittings for six months, during which it received 34 petitions from aggrieved persons.
Four months after the Judicial Panel concluded sitting, victims of the brutality by security personnel in Taraba State, the majority of whom had testified before the panel are seeking compensation, as accorded their counterparts in some states.
As the economic situation in the country bites harder on the average Nigerian, they say the payment of the compensation will cushion their sufferings.
A peaceful protest was held by the victims, to buttress their concerns.
Victims of police brutality and other security agencies in Taraba State had in the course of the sitting by the Judicial Panel of Enquiry and Restitution, demanded compensations running into hundreds of millions.
