Electoral reform bill:- CSOs condemn Gbajabiamila’s rejection

The Alliance of Civil Society Organisations for Electoral and Democratic Space, ACCESS, has reacted to the rejection of a motion by the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, seeking to draw the attention of the House of Representatives to fulfill its promise made to Nigerians on the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by the first quarter of 2021, saying is a disservice to the nation’s democracy.

Speaking to reporters after the motion was thrown out at the plenary session, the group said the action of the Speaker poses to undermine the credibility of the 2023 general elections and clear evidence that a conspiracy has been hatched by the leadership of the National Assembly.

Earlier, the group began its weekly “OccupyNASS” protest at the National Assembly complex to demand immediate passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 and said the final stage of the legislative action must be transparent as major works have been carried out by the needed committees of both chambers.

It stressed that the passage of the bill must be the needed advancement to the electoral system by ensuring electronic accreditation of voters and transmission of results while capturing the 10-for-10 citizens’ demands already submitted to the National Assembly by the CSOs must also be captured by the federal lawmakers.
