ECOWAS Parliamentarians Worried Over Poor Implementation Of Projects

Members of the ECOWAS Parliament have criticized the poor implementation and execution of developmental projects in some of its member states.

Speaking at the ongoing Delocalized meeting of the joint committee on communications and information Technology/Committee on Education, Science and Technology / Committee on Labour Employment, Youth, Sports, and Culture in Conakry, members of the ECOWAS parliament said it the situation is unfortunate and regrettable.

The Chairman of the Committee on communication, Hon. Halidou Nassirou, representing Niger urged members states to ensure that ECOWAS projects are given priority in an effort to boost regional integration.

Also, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Industry and Private Sector Promotion,  Mamadou Traore, revealed that the Commission is committed to boosting Small and Medium Enterprises.

Mr. Traore noted that ECOWAS intends to strengthen SME’s through regional Capacity Building Programmes.

He said that ECOWAS new investment policy, which is expected to kick off in December this year, will address challenges being experienced in the region.

Mr. Traore disclosed that ECOWAS intends to leverage on Entrepreneurship and SMEs as a tool for building a strong foundation for success, inclusive development, job provision for the majority and progress in the subregion.

He maintained it will serve as an opportunity to turn member states bourgeoning population to a blessing rather than a curse.

Mr. Traore urged parliamentarians to use their position to tackle challenges of insufficient capacity, poor business climate, lack of access to market and relevant financing by ensuring projects of the commission are executed.

He also urged the Parliament to strengthen its committee on  Entrepreneurship and SMEs development so that they can effectively monitor the implementation of ECOWAS policies and programs.
