South Sudan Town Prepares Against Ebola Spread

In the South Sudanese town of Yei, preparations are underway to guard against the spread of Ebola from neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Yei is some 300 kilometers from the DRC, which is battling an outbreak of the viral haemorraghic fever.

A key concern is the porous border between the two countries, with only three of the 15 main routes currently being monitored for the virus, according to the United Nations.

At the local hospital, medical teams assess facilities, like the setting up of Ebola isolation tents.

House-to-house efforts are also underway to educate people about prevention, including in areas where there’s been fighting between government forces and rebel factions.

The rate of new cases in eastern Congo has accelerated in recent weeks. An emergency World Health Organization (WHO) committee said in October that the outbreak was likely to worsen significantly unless the response was stepped up.
