DRC: Presidential election kicks off in democratic republic of Congo

Meanwhile, elections in the DRC, which came after repeated delays eventually held on Sunday to produce a successor to President Joseph Kabila and is deemed decisive for a peaceful transfer of power.

There are twenty-one candidates vying to replace Joseph Kabila. A political analyst in Kinshasa believes whoever wins must tackle corruption.

“We just need a very strong and determined leadership that will bang on the table that this has to stop and whoever does this, this is what will happen and I can tell you that the coffers of the government in terms of revenue will be filled up just like that,” said Nkere Ntanda, a political analyst.

The DRC has only had four presidents since it gained independence from Belgium in 1960. Its population of 80 million people is scattered across a country with poor infrastructure, which is an issue many voters would like to change.
