There was drama in the Senate on Wednesday over the passage of a bill seeking to establish the Armed Forces Service Commission as lawmakers disagreed over the constitutionality of the content of the proposed bill.

According to the bill sponsored by Senate Minority leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, the appointment of the service chiefs will be subjected to the recommendations of the proposed Commission.

The debate on the bill took a partisan dimension as senators from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, strongly kicked against it.

The President of the Senate, however, put a voice vote, with the nays having it, a decision Abaribe disagreed with.

Abaribe citing order 73 of the Senate standing rule called for a division, asking that lawmakers vote individually on the bill.

The tensed atmosphere forced Lawan to call for a closed-door session.
