A banana artwork made by Maurizio Cattelan an Italian artist,  with a  banana strapped to the wall with duct tape,  sold for $120,000 was eaten by another artist David Datuna, who claims it, he was hungry and it was part of his art performance.

The banana artwork was part of Maurizio Cattelan’s exhibition in the Art Basel Miami Beach, the work was titled ‘’Comedian’’, one which was an unusual artwork with an unusual descriptive named tagged to it and people could really understand what it really meant. The artist over time has been known for having rather unusual collections, he was owned a $6 million 18 karat gold toilet which was later stolen.

However, David Datuna, which is an installation and performance artist from Georgia, known for his unusual dramatic performances, one of which he installed an SOS American flag in front of the white house during the anti-pun show in Moscow, claims that he understood the artwork and that’s why he ate it, apart from the fact that he was also hungry.

He ate the banana during the exhibition and all were in shock, ‘’ it wasn’t vandalism it was art performance from me and absolutely I am not sorry ‘’ said David in an interview, he also added that his performance was meant to invoke the question from one artist to another ‘’what is truly art, is the Banana artwork, art or not?’’.

To David, the act was just an artistic performance and this has really got the whole of art lovers truly wondering what is Art?
