hackers to face homicide as patient dies

A ransomware attack on the University Hospital of Düsseldorf (UKD) in Germany that caused a series of failure to the IT Systems has led to the death of a woman as reported by The Hacker News.

Although there is an unspoken rule amongst Hackers to leave medical facilities out the attempt to gain illegal funds through extortion, this particular incident backfired in an unusual way and is now a homicide case according to authorities.

The attack, a Citrix ADC CVE-2019-19781, a well known Virtual Private Network vulnerability, was initially launched at the Heinrich Heine University in fulfilment of a ransom note tendered previously but was unfortunately redirected at the hospital systems which crippled the entire network on September 10, whilst attempting to transfer out the patient to another hospital 30km away.

The patient was scheduled for a life-saving treatment before the incident that cost her life occurred.

This is the first time a cyberattack has had direct live consequences on an individual and authorities seek to now attach more severity to crimes such as Internet Cybercrime. The Cologne prosecutors have launched a homicide case against the hackers.
