The Kano Civil Society Forum, an umbrella body of over 190 civil societies has asked the Kano State government to establish a judicial panel of inquiry into the alleged police brutality and extortion.
A letter signed by the body’s president, Ibrahim Waiya, drew the attention of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to the nationwide protest by Nigerian citizens, concerning the operations of the disbanded Police Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, on allegations of brutality, extrajudicial killings, harassment, and intimidation, as well as a violation of citizens’ rights.
The forum said that although Kano State did not experience much from the End SARS protests, there is the need to establish a panel of inquiry in the state, to check some of the excesses of the police.
They want the panel to be accorded the mandate to assess the damages done to public and private properties and businesses, so as to support those who suffered any losses, in relation to the circumstances.
