COVID-19 updates in Nigeria: House of Reps say it’s Illegal to repatriate Almajiris, 4641 cases and other updates

The Nigerian Centre of Disease Control NCDC, confirmed 242 new cases of the COVID 19 virus, increasing the number of confirmed cases to 4641 in the country. The new cases were discovered from across the country.

According to Geoffrey Onyeama, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs the Nigerian flown back are under imperative isolation at Isolation centres in Lagos and Abuja. Onyeama made known that the centres won’t be able to take people anymore have spaces are all occupied. However, there are still willing Nigerians looking to come back home from abroad. Lagos is the epicentre of the outbreak in Nigeria, the state made up 1933 cases of the country’s 4641 cases.

The statistics show that 88 cases of the virus were confirmed in Lagos, the most populated city in the country, 64 in Kano, 49 in katsina, 13 cases were confirmed in Kaduna, 9 in Ogun, Gombe with 6 confirmed cases, Adamawa with 4, Federal Capital Territory with 3, 1 case each were confirmed in Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Zamfara and Bauchi.

As a preventative measure against the COVID 19 virus, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, banned the importation of livestock into the state from neighbouring states.
All livestock markets in the state will also be shutting down throughout the month of May as part of the preventive measure.

Not only the movement of livestock into the state has been banned by the Akwa Ibom governor, but also people coming from other states are not allowed to cross the state border.
Wearing of face masks within the region has now become compulsory and religious and social governments have also been banned.

The House of Representatives have also in a plenary session currently underway asked the Federal Government to ask state governors to stop the repatriations of almajiris from their states during the lockdown as it is a violation of their fundamental human rights to reside in any part of Nigeria they so wish.
