Environmentalists from the Niger/Delta region have described the recently concluded 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, as mere ritual of nations coming together to talk about, the environment without taking action, saying it without any other significant shining light besides the Loss and Damage proposal.
The environmentalists who disclosed this during a press conference on the outcome of COP27, in Port Harcourt, recently, said hopes the COP would call for a phased out of all fossil fuels were dashed.
Recounting their experiences, the Executive Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation(HOMEF) Dr. Nnimmo Bassey, said COP27 went in the way of rituals and did not rise beyond the low bars set by previous editions.
He argued that Rather than recognize and pay the climate debt, which consolidates on proposed Green Climate Fund at COP15 and acceded to payments for Loss and Damage at COP27, hopes for the recovery of damaged environment were shattered by the usual lack of seriousness in the discussions.
The CSO urged Nigerian negotiators to see COP28 holding in the United Arab Emirates as a moment to press industrialized nations and polluting entities to accept liability for the climate catastrophe and to make adequate annual payments for it.
