The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, has raised concern over the spate of targeted attacks on the Commission’s offices in some states as it will affect the preparation of the 2023 general elections should such acts continue.

Yakubu revealed this at an emergency meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, in Abuja over the several targeted attacks on INEC offices in states.

The INEC Chairman said that the Commission is working closely with security agencies and host communities to fish out perpetrators and bring them to justice in tackling any future recurrences.

He noted that the attacks were on the rise since the 2019 general elections and have now developed into crisis, saying that the meeting will also provide the opportunity to take briefings from across the country in threats to the INEC facilities and to deliberate on how best to protect them.

In recent months, over 23 INEC offices in some states have been vandalized as millions of properties were damaged including the Commission’s offices in three local govt areas of Ebonyi State.

The electoral umpire is expected to begin Continuous Voter Registration on June 28th while preparations are underway for two bye-elections scheduled for 19th June 2021 in Sabon Gari Constituency of Kaduna State and Gwaram Federal Constituency in Jigawa State.
