French President Emmanuel Macron has criticised Russia’s influence in Africa, deeming it a “preoccupation” for the continents’ people.

He said this during an official visit in Cameroon.

Speaking in Yaounde alongside his Cameroon counterpart Paul Biya, Macron said Russia’s presence in Africa is based on “misinformation, militias and complicity with weakened powers.”

Macron started a three-leg Africa tour in Cameroon on Tuesday, a trip meant to strengthen political ties with the continent and help boost agricultural production amid growing food insecurity linked to the Ukraine conflict.

The mineral-rich central African nation is a major food producer for the region, and Macron’s delegation is seeking investment opportunities in the agricultural sector.
